With the start of a new year, many people feel motivated to keep their homes clean and tidy. While it’s great to feel productive, it’s important to avoid overwhelming yourself by trying to clean everything at once. Instead, try breaking up the additional but essential chores and approaching them gradually. We’re talking about the jobs you deal with less regularly – think, cleaning out the washing machine filter or vacuuming your curtains. Not sure how often jobs, carpet cleaning, need doing? Check out our handy guide.
If you’re looking for more tips on how to declutter your home, check it out our practical advice on how to declutter your home in stages, starting with small steps and working your way up to bigger tasks. You can also try the Room-Perimeter method which involves working around the perimeter of a room, starting from one corner and gradually moving around. Focus only on the visible and within-reach items, and resist the urge to initially dig into drawers, cabinets, or storage bins. Categorize each item you come across as “Keep”, “Donate”, or “Discard”
Remember, decluttering your home is a process that takes time and effort. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t get everything done at once. Celebrate your progress along the way and enjoy the benefits of a clean and tidy home! 🏡🧹🧺

We have all sorts of materials in our homes. Wood, glass, tile, metal, carpet, fabrics, stone, plastics and more. They all have one thing in common. Sooner or later, they all need to be cleaned. Fortunately, even with so many materials, there are only four basic principles you need to know in order to clean any of them. Don’t shout it out… C.H.A.T. it out!
The basic principles of cleaning can be easily remembered by the acronym, C.H.A.T. The four letters stand for Chemical, Heat, Agitation and Time. Proper application of these four principles is important for effective cleaning.
Chemical-The word chemical doesn’t always mean toxic; technically, even water is a chemical. Everyone uses soap to wash themselves, shampoo to clean their hair and various detergents to clean the dishes they eat on, and the clothes they wear. All of these cleaning agents are chemicals, and properly used, they are harmless. There are different cleaning agents designed to remove a variety of soils from all kinds of surfaces. A product designed to work on tile and grout floors would likely damage carpet or wood. A wood cleaner would not do an adequate job of cleaning glass. To work well the right chemicals must be matched to surface and suitable for the soil that you are trying to remove.
Heat-Hot water cleans better than cold water. In situations where it is safe to do so, adding heat to your cleaning solution will increase chemical effectiveness, and decrease overall cleaning time. When you are dealing with heavily soiled surfaces, heat is especially helpful. Grease and oil are broken down by heat, so using hot cleaning solution and hot water to rinse will yield excellent results.
Agitation-Scouring pads, brushes, coarse cloths, and even high pressure water are some methods used to achieve agitation. Agitation helps by distributing your cleaning agent, dislodging soils from surfaces and suspending them in the cleaning solution to be rinsed away.
Time-We all know that the longer you scrub and rinse something, the cleaner it gets. While that is true, it’s not the best use of time. When you are cleaning, dwell time of your cleaning agent is important. Dwell time means that you allow the product time to work, breaking down and dissolving soils. The amount of dwell time will depend on the type and quantity of soiling, the surface being cleaned and the strength and concentration of your cleaning solution.
Easy as Pie -Think of all of the four principles (chemical, heat, agitation, time) as four slices of a pie. If you slice the pie evenly, everyone gets the same amount. But, if someone wants a bigger slice, you will have to decrease the size of one or more of the other pieces of the pie.
Here’s how it works in cleaning: If you have to use a very mild cleaning chemical, you’ll need to increase dwell time, agitation and/or temperature. If you can’t use hot water, you will have to use more chemical, dwell time, or scrub more aggressively. If you can’t use agitation, you will need more time, heat and/or chemical action. Increasing temperature by using hot water is usually the best way to improve cleaning efficiency and save time. Hot water reduces the amount of chemical you need to clean, suspends more soil, and rinses better. Temperatures over 130ºF begin to kill microbes on surfaces, providing sanitizing benefits. If you apply The 4 Principles of Cleaning, you can be more successful cleaning just about anything.
Of course, when it comes to cleaning your carpet, upholstery, rugs and tile, Carpet Cure technicians are the experts at applying the 4 principles of cleaning. That’s why we produce the best results every time, guaranteed.
You vacuum twice a week, like clockwork. You ask everyone to take their shoes off at the door, leave your muddy shoes on the garage stoop, and toss your throw rugs in the washer every weekend. You do your level best to keep dirt outside where it belongs and pollutants inside your home to a minimum.
But no family is perfect.
Despite your best efforts at keeping spaghetti in the kitchen and dirt in the garden, no matter how careful you are, sooner or later it will happen. Someone will spill food or drink onto your carpet. You may see it the second it happens, or you may not spot it until it has dried and set. Either way, you will panic. You will fear that your beautiful carpet is ruined forever.
And you will wonder what to do.
What you need to know is that whether a simple spill comes out or becomes a permanent stain depends just as much on what you don’t do as what you do. Here are a few recommendations to help increase your chances of a successful stain treating outcome:
DO NOT rub or scrub the carpet with a towel or brush. This will distort the face yarns and cause permanent damage to the surface, which will only amplify the look of any stain.
DO pick up any chunks and then remove the excess liquid by gently blotting or scraping up as much of the spill as you can. If it is a liquid, such as coffee, wine or soda, use a white towel and blot up as much of the spill as possible. Keep blotting until your towel stops absorbing liquid.
DO NOT spread the spot. When scraping up thick spills, such as spaghetti sauce, work gently from the outside edges of the spot toward the middle. Scrape up as much as possible before using any spot cleaners.
DO call a reputable professional cleaning company as soon as possible. Experienced carpet cleaners will have a specialty spotter for just about any type of spill. In addition, they will have the equipment to promptly remove the stain and flush it with fresh water. Prompt professional attention is your best chance to remove spills without damaging the color or texture of your carpet.
DO NOT use cleaning agents from the grocery store. Most often, these products are low quality and ineffective. But even high quality products still need to be used carefully. A cleaning product must be carefully chosen for the type of spot and the kind of fabric that your carpet is made from. If you try to use the wrong product, or use it incorrectly, you may make the spill more difficult or even impossible for even the most experienced professional to remove.
While nobody can guarantee that every spot and stain will come out, by following these tips you will make cleaning up spots and spills much easier. You will be more likely to remove the stain completely, leaving your carpet looking good and helping your carpet to look good for years to come.
What To Do When You Move Into A Home That Previously Had Pets?
People with dog and cat allergies can experience ill effects that range from mildly annoying to downright irritating. If you or someone in your family has allergic reactions to pets, you may already be aware that the cause is generally dander. Dander, made up of particles shed from animals and humans every day, is mainly comprised of dead skin cells. People can be allergic to dander from any kind of animal, but the most common allergies are cats, dogs and also birds. Regardless of the animal, dander is virtually microscopic and ends up on just about every surface in the home. This is a problem if you are planning on moving into a home that was previously occupied by pet owners. Carpet Cure offers the following suggestions as a way to minimize exposure to these allergens and can help with pet allergies.
Step 1. Meticulous Dusting
A very thorough dusting of all surfaces in the house is the first step. If you plan to do this yourself, wear a disposable filter mask designed to protect you from allergen exposure. The goal of this cleaning is to remove as much dust from surfaces as possible. For better results, prior to dusting, install pleated furnace filters designed to remove allergens. Set the central AC fan to “on” instead of “auto” to continuously capture airborne dust created during the cleaning.
Effectively work from top to bottom in each room, be sure to get all of the dust from above door and window frames, ceiling fans, duct grills and baseboards. It is best to do this tedious dusting with a HEPA vacuum and brush attachment. After you are done, turn off the central unit fan and allow the dust to settle for an hour or so, then vacuum the carpets thoroughly. A HEPA vacuum is best as they can capture 99.97% of all allergens.
Step 2. Scrupulous Cleaning
Once you are sure you have removed as much of the dust as possible, you should clean all the surfaces. Allergies are caused by various proteins, and some of these are contained in residues adhering to all kinds of surfaces. There is no need to use special anti-allergen cleaners to do this. Any cleaner designed for the surface will do. However, if you are sensitive to fragrances or certain chemicals, there are low VOC products available. VOCs are volatile organic compounds that can cause respiratory irritation in some individuals.
What about the carpet? The best option is to replace the carpet prior to cleaning the home. If the carpet is to be cleaned, the goal is to reduce the allergens to negligible levels. Of course Carpet Cure should handle this for you. Our cleaning system is designed to remove deeply embedded soils, pollutants, allergens and contamination that could otherwise aggravate allergies.
Step 3. Replace Filters
During all your cleaning, a significant amount of allergens were likely dispersed into the air. Wait about 24 hours and then replace furnace filters again with high quality allergen reducing filters. Ideally, the ventilation system should be professionally cleaned to remove contaminants and potential allergens found in the ductwork, air conditioner coils and air-handler. For most people, a home with a previous pet can be cleaned well enough to make it a great place to live. If you have severe allergies you should always seek the advice of your doctor. Ask if it is okay to move into a home that was previously occupied by pets.
